 A Message from…Mrs. Bland

I still cannot believe that today is the last day of school.  As the children and teachers are saying goodbye and everyone is wrapping up for this year, I am preparing for next year.   Thank you and good luck to Mrs. Johnston, Mrs. Kurzawa, and to Mrs. Van Duyne for their years of dedication to St. Rose School As we say goodbye to three wonderful teachers, we welcome four new teachers to our staff for next year. Mrs. Susan Jackson will be teaching Kindergarten.  Mrs. Jackson graduated from Governors State and resides in Bourbonnais.  She comes to St. Rose with a lot of experience teaching Kindergarten through 3rd Grade Reading.  She especially has had experience for the past two years as a Title 1 Reading Specialist.  She is very enthusiastic and excited about teaching Kindergarten at St. Rose. Miss Kristy Hansen, our new 2nd grade teacher just graduated from Illinois State University.  She resides in Chebanse. Miss Hansen earned a degree in Early Elementary Education.  Her specialty is concentrated on Preschool through 3rd Grade.  Tuesday, she visited Mrs. Kurzawa and then went to Mrs. Vimpeny’s class to meet the 1st graders who will be in her class next year. Mrs. Tracy Sondag who many of you know as our 2nd Grade aide and Jr. High Math aide this year will be teaching 4th Grade part-time next year.  Mrs. Sondag began her college career in Oklahoma at the University of Central Oklahoma and completed her degree at St. Francis University.  She earned a B.A. in Elementary Education with endorsements in Learning Behaviors.  Mrs. Specht will teach Science and Social Studies to the fourth grade since Mrs. Sondag is only part-time. Mrs. Jana Viano will be teaching Jr. High Math.  She lives in Diamond.  Mrs. Viano earned her a B.A. degree from the University of Kansas.  She received her Post Baccalaureate Teaching Degree in Elementary Education in 2008 from Western Governors University in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Mrs. Viano is very excited about teaching Math.  The 5th through 7th grade students have met Mrs. Viano recently when she substiuted in Mrs. Mosier's and Mrs. Plese's class.   I will be concentrating on hiring a food service for our hot lunch program for the next school year..  I do have two services that I am considering.  I will consider what the students would like to eat and what it will cost the parents. Enclosed you will find a flyer from the Wilmington Middle School about Summer athletic camps.  Mrs. Beth Norman brought these by yesterday.   The deadlines are today.  She assured me that they take registration up to the date of first day of camp.    The office will be open in June and August from 8am-Noon Monday through Friday.   In conclusion, I would like to wish all of you a safe, happy, and enjoyable vacation.  Thank you for all your support this year and may God bless you.   I look forward to a great 2008-2009 with your children.

Thank You Rita Rabideau (Mrs. Johnston’s mother) for giving us a wonderful assembly for our last days of school.  Chris Fascione is a great storyteller and we all enjoyed him very much.   Thank You Sharon Wuethrich, Maureen Plese, Dawn Smith, Sharon Homerding, Jodi Lombardi, Christa Raymond, Diane Van Duyne, Susan Koziol, and Ali Holman for being on the Uniform Committee. Thank you to the anonymous donor who printed the uniform choices in color for parents to view.

  Uniform Results

. The results of our Unifrom Survey are in.  97% of our families voted.  86% voted for a change.  In grades K-5, 81% voted for light blue polo for girls and boys with navy pants/shorts or Belair Plaid jumper or skirt for girls and black shoes.  I will have to say that the blue shirt will not look good with the jumper or the skirt.  Girls will be allowed to wear white shirts

when they wear the jumper or skirt.  In grades 6th - 8th, 91%

voted for the navy blue polo for girls and boys, hooded style sweatshirt, khaki color docker style pants for girls with 72% voting for brown or black shoes and brown or black belts.   We plan on having samples of the 6-8th grade sweatshirts available for you to see very soon.  You will be able to stop by the office during the summer to see where to purchase them. Many of you wanted to know why are we making a change and the reason is because the students came to me and asked me to consider the change.  Sixth through Eighth graders want to look "cool."  They are growing up and want to show that they are the leaders of our school.  Wearing khakis is one way of letting everyone know that sees them that they are the older students at St. Rose School.  I suppose after wearing navy pants for six years, they want a change.  I was willing to look into it for them and they were willing live with the results.  You voted and I wanted to share the results with you.  If for any reason this is a hardship on anyone, please remember that there is assistance.  All you have to do is call me and your child will be able to have the new uniforms.

Next year is a transition year, so blue or white shirts will be allowed for the 2008-2009 school year.  Navy or khaki pants/shorts will be allowed for the Jr. High students during this transition year.  So if you have already purchased your uniforms for next year, you will be able to wear them. I would also like to recommend that this uniform change will remain until the new 2008-2009 Kindergarten class graduates from 8th grade.

A Message from... Mrs. Johnston (Kindergarten)     What a wonderful retirement party!  Thank you to all the people who planned and helped in any way.    I was completely surprised and overwhelmed with your generous gifts.  With the gift certificate, one of the items I plan to buy is a 'rose' bush. Mrs. Johnston's Traveling Book- how precious and special- I can't stop smiling over the wonderful comments and stories!  However, the best gift I am leaving with are all the wonderful memories that each of you helped to create over the past 22 years.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

A Message from... Mrs. Vimpeny (First Grade)   This has been a busy week for the first graders.  On Tuesday, we honored Mrs. Johnston at a retirement party.  We think she was surprised.  We will miss her.  We had a nice surprise yesterday.  Our new second grade teacher came to visit our room.  We think she's nice, and she's also pretty!
Besides cleaning our desks, lockers, and classroom, we finally got to perform our play.  Everyone did a great job!  We hope you enjoyed it. Thank you to all who helped with costumes and learning lines.   We started today with an end of the school year mass.  Then we watched a video. Next we walked to the park for a picnic lunch.  Finally we came back to school for some fun games.  Thanks to all parents who helped out in any way to make our last full day so enjoyable.  Tomorrow we will only be first graders for about 40 minutes before becoming OFFICIAL SECOND GRADERS!  Congratulations!  I will miss you!  Have a wonderful and safe summer.

A Message from... Mrs. Kurzawa (Second Grade)     Thank you and more thank you!

Thank you to the second graders who did such a wonderful job on Wednesday!  Thank you to their parents and extended families who attended the performances and supported them by helping them with costumes, learning lines and songs.  Thank you to all the parents for the beautiful hanging basket.

Thank you to St Rose for the six years that you allowed me to be part of your school family.  I will have fond memories of all of you.

I won't say good-bye but just God Bless You until we meet again - and I will stop in and visit during the school year.

Have a wonderful summer!

A Message from... Mrs. Specht (Fifth Grade)    It is hard to believe the school year is over.  Fifth grade ended the year on a positive note by winning a good behavior party after enough compliments on their good behavior to fill the party jar to overflowing.  We celebrated with ice cream sundaes and even danced a little.  I have been especially proud of their mature behavior during the last month of school.  They have been helpful and did a great job cleaning the classroom for next year’s class.

Thank you for making the year a good one.  We wish John Piercy and his family many blessings as they move to Texas.  I hope you all have a terrific summer and may God keep you in His loving care.  With love, Mrs. Specht
